Learning to Fence at Bay State Fencers
Learning to fence can be challenging for some, but is rewarding for most! Fencing is a fun and safe lifelong sport for all ages and athletic abilities. This may come as a surprise, considering the sport's origins, but modern fencing equipment and rules ensure that injuries are limited to the occasional bruised arm or ego.
Parent's Guide to Fencing
Bay State Fencers is committed to making certain that every fencer who joins us achieves his or her athletic goals through fencing. We strive to make this journey an enriching and satisfying experience for everyone, regardless of his or her goals. Some fence to win as many tournaments as possible, some fence to improve physical fitness and others fence for fun.
We have worked hard to create a fencing club and fencing classes that meet the needs of a wide range of fencers by:
- Providing a fun and safe place for young children to learn the basics of the sport of fencing, to develop self-confidence and to learn to respect for one’s self, one’s opponents and one’s coach.
- Encouraging intermediate fencers of all ages and all athletic abilities to enjoy the sport and to develop their skills through competition.
- Providing superior training, coaching, and mentorship to an advanced group of competitive fencers.
- Offering a welcoming and supportive club environment that reflects the passion and commitment of our students, our members and our coaches.
Bay State Fencers is a member of the New England Division, North Atlantic Section, of the United States Fencing Association.
Safety First
Appropriate protective gear - mask, padded jacket, and glove are required for any training bout. Competitive fencers are also required to wear fencing knickers and plastron (underarm protector). This equipment is provided for all fencers enrolled in a Learn to Fence class at Bay State Fencers.
Fencers enrolling in ongoing or competitive programs are required to own their own uniform and equipment. This is both a health and safety issue (H1N1 precaution) and a responsibility issue.
All fencing weapons are blunt and very flexible. Fencing jackets are made from puncture resistant fabrics (such as ballistic nylon) and masks covering the head and neck are inspected and tested before every tournament.
The rules of modern fencing are designed to encourage safety and are strictly enforced at our club and at all USFA sanctioned competitions.
